These limited edition prints were created by Nick Lethert, a native
of St. Paul, Minnesota, who at the age of 30 undertook the difficult
process of learning the language of, and moving to, Minneapolis,
against the wishes of friends and family who worried for his safety.
Years later he is able to travel freely in both cities, fluent enough
with both languages and street systems to avoid suspicion.
He travels with equal fluency in the world of his
drawings,a world with its own logic and customs which has been influenced
by, among other things, his loving family, the Irish Catholic Diaspora,
Laurel and Hardy, Paul Klee, black tea, and the insufficient sunlight
of the long Minnesota winter.
His own inability to play music in a manner pleasing to his discriminating
ear led him to attempt to depict his musical feelings visually.
The current result of this lifelong obsession is represented by
these prints, conjured from the ether with the help of Nick's wife
Liz Welch, acting as spiritual guide and midwife to the entire process.
All of these prints began as line drawings in pen
and ink created over the last 25 years. They were scanned into a
computer and colored before being printed on Somerset Velvet 100%
cotton mould made watercolor paper from St. Cuthberts Mill
in England, using MIS archival pigment-based ink in an Epson 1200
inkjet printer.
These materials were chosen after a long search
for a combination of paper and ink which would be of archival quality
while retaining the intense saturated colors intended. Each piece
presents a printing challenge as the printer must be manipulated
to achieve the proper color balance using the archival ink. The
prints are available in larger sizes using the IRIS system with
Equipoise archival ink on Arches 140# all cotton paper.
These prints are for sale in limited, signed editions.
